Hanne (pronounced Hannah I think); windswept
Bob Dylan was actually the first person to introduce me to Hanne Hukkelberg. His radio show played some interesting tracks at the time, not the least was a bouncing, off-kilter diddy named “Do Not As I Do” by the Nordic native. And though her name constantly reminds me of a certain childhood masterpiece, she also makes some incredibly innovative music.
Since age three she’s played jazz, rock, industrial gothic prog metal and brooded in a doom metal band in high school aptly named Funeral. On her newest release Blood from a Stone, she plays all over that map using found sound, dwarven chants, seductive moans, warbling six strings and the kitchen appliance playing (it’s incredible) Hurra Torpedo.
Her 2006 long player Rykestraße 68 won the Norwegian Grammy for that year, and according to her website, she’s been nominated for Norwegian Female Artist of the Year (2010). Not too shabby. And here’s what ices my cake; she supported Wilco on their 2009 European tour. So hot.
So to sum it up; she’s talented. But, as always, you should listen for yourself.
