I’m often skeptical about sons or daughters of famous musicians. It seems like they often ride the fame of their parents, but this is not the case with Justin Townes Earle. He crafts legitimate folk songs that benefit from being the son of Steve Earl, and all the drugs and depression that comes with it. His past has been full of ups and downs that are reflected in his music.
My favorite song of Earle’s, Mama’s Eyes, gives a rundown of his life and how his parents are evident in his personality. He actually played in his father’s band for a while, but was kicked out because of his drug addiction, which is really saying something if you know anything about Steve Earle’s drug problems.
Justin Towns Earle was definitely influenced by his father, as well as his namesake Townes Van Zandt (a folk legend and mentor of Steve Earle), in lifestyle choices and their southern folk music style. Now he seems to be clean and making good music.
