Pitch to Fit: Twin Sister

0 Comments 11 July 2011

Fancy a sit on your porch and a gaze at the clouds?  Well done then.  You’ve found a band that does its darndest to keep you in that mood.  Twin Sister is as relaxed as you can get.  After recording their excellent debut EP, Vampires With Dreaming Kids, the quintet did the only sensible thing a growing band would do: move to Brooklyn.

Soon after they arrived, and with much New York in their blood, they released a second EP.  This time with vastly more idiosyncrasies and a Shoegaze flair.  The 2010 Color Your Life is full of  minute details woven into each of the six songs.  So much so, that if you listen the whole way through, you’ll swear it was twice as long, and race back for more.  The wafting “All Around and Away We Go” is, to this day, one of the coolest songs I’ve listened to.  Lead vocalist Andrea Estella has a voice like a divine muppet, like someone’s creative musings are being channeled through her throat.  Rolling her rr’s when she eeks “merry-go-round” still gets me every time.  And if you’ve seen the video for the track, you’ll never look at a simple hand wave the same way again.

“Lady Daydream” is one of my favorites: a lovely shy duet that promises much and brings you there slowly and sweetly.

Together with band members, Dev Gupta on keyboards, Gabe D’Amico on bass, Eric Cardona on guitar and vocals, and drummer Bryan Ujueta; Andrea Estella makes Twin Sister one of the more interesting bands in the land…to say the least.  In loo of their very first upcoming LP (In Heaven out 9/27/11), the band has released a preview track available to download for free here.  “Bad Street” draws funk from a deep well, splashing it across the undertones and overtones of the track.  When they perform at Pitchfork Music Festival on Sunday July 17th, the faithful will likely get more new material and the new fans will get a heck of a wonderful surprise.
