Quick Fix!: Plants and Animals | Luke De-Sciscio | Jack Ladder | Shenandoah Davis | Fixers | Germany Germany | The Honey Pies

1 Comment 06 December 2011

We currently have 275 unread emails in our site inbox, and that doesn’t even include the ones we’ve marked as “Good Stuff” or “Matt Would Make Out With This”.  Woefully, all of the writers at TWJ have day/night jobs that require time to grade and recover from, so we are eagerly anticipating the day that writing about music becomes our one and only occupation (hint hint record/publicity folks…call us).  Anyway, the point being that we seldom have enough time or adjectives to cover everything we would like to; our primary mission above all being just to share as many good (and free) tunes as we can.  I speak honestly when I say we at TWJ want nothing in return from you, we just really love sharing music.  Sensitive folks we are.

So begins our Quick Fix series; a collection of briefly described songs and videos that are really really good and deserve more than a passing glance…which is essentially what we’re doing.  Do as we say and not as we do…  Ideally, this series should rarely happen, so if our lives ever get organized, this will be a far and between occasion.  Luckily for you, that is very unlikely to happen.

Plants And Animals – ” Lightshow”

Brand new song from Plants and Animals.  ”Lightshow” is the first track from their brand new album The End of That, out February 28th from Secret City.  It’s brand new.

Little Comets – “Worry” / “His Thunder”

I’m counting down the days till the stellar Little Comets loose their Worry EP on December 12th.  The two tracks they’ve released so far, the upbeat “Worry” and the pondering “His Thunder” are an excellent, excellent start. Proof you want? Proof you shall have. As well as this live performance of “His Thunder” in a really long creepy tunnel.

Luke De-Sciscio – “I Don’t Want To Be Free”

We got this submission just a few hours ago, but we’ve had our eye on this British singer for a good bit longer, enjoying his honest storytelling and gilded pipes.  This new release from him is ridiculously gorgeous.  He quickly quiets the fancy that I myself could ever sing for a band. Give him the job instead.

Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders – “Cold Feet” / “Beautiful Sound”

“I wanna make like a tree.  I wanna leave.”  The Australian Ladder actually sings that on “Cold Feet”.  His lyrics aren’t exactly the strongest on Jenny’s block, but somehow I still love the croon and attitude behind the wandering music off Ladder’s third album, Hurtsville.  Many, many comparisons of his style could be made.  I won’t make them.

Shenandoah Davis – The Company We Keep

We did a quick mention of Shenandoah Davis’ music a non-mentionable time ago, and I’ve been wanting to do a record review of her wonderful The Company We Keep ever since.  But, time and all that.  So I’ll put two free songs below this text and hope you’ll realize how great she is.  ’Cause she’s really good.

Fixers – “Majesties Ranch”

From the new Imperial Goddess of Mercy EP, the lead “Majesties Ranch” by Fixers is heavy in O-Eh-O’s and small bits of insane magic.  They’ve got a new video out for the single too (here).  Also on the EP are the much more odd, but neat because they’re odd “Evil Carbs” and “Trans Love”.

Germany Germany – “120″

Drew Harris sent us a submission a week ago saying Germany Germany is back after a prolonged absence, but just a few days ago, his website says he’s back on an “indefinite hiatus due to personal reasons”.  Just as he was all set to release the debut track from his long awaited LP, Radiowave II.  ”120″ is a galloping herd of unicorns on a fateful diadem day.  Here’s to hoping Germany Germany returns very soon.

The Honey Pies – “Girl”

One of the best for last.  Australia’s The Honey Pies are set to release their sophomore album, Carpe Carp December 16th.  They sent us a very polite email about not wanting to clutter our inbox and here’s a bunch of mp3s and goodbye.  The very best kind.  ”Girl” is a hip-hoppy tune full of brass and sweet, sweet solo pluckage.  I’m a fan of the album.  I haven’t heard it yet, but I can already tell.

Whew, that’s it for now!  Happy listening!
