Zulu Winter: “We Should Be Swimming”

No Comments 23 February 2012

I’d like to share Zulu Winter‘s “We Should Be Swimming” with you for two reasons: a) because, honestly, you should be swimming, and dancing and running amuck amongst life.  You deserve as much. And b) because the UK quintet is bound for greatness, and I thought you should know.  Most of the band met at school, messing around with Nirvana covers and trading instruments.  It wasn’t until after they graduated and saw life full in the face that they knew music was what they really wanted to turn to.  So, hunkered down in apartments and lofts, the group wrote and honed an album’s worth of songs before they let anyone hear it.

“…we wanted to write our record and have the songs ready by the time we played any shows, because if you come out and aren’t up to speed playing-wise, without enough material, people are quick to write you off.  We believed we needed to be as good as we could be before people heard us.”

“We Should Be Swimming” has some secret coded messages for those who can spell well, and T.S. Elliot lyrics embedded within.  But high and above all of that, it’s a fun song that takes you well out of your element, just past the county line to the closest star gazing spot.

And for your listening palette, I’ve also embedded another song, “Let’s Move Back to Front”.  See which you like better.

And a trippy video directed by Abby Warrilow and Lewis Gourlay for “We Should Be Swimming” that I’m sure makes sense to someone else. Cool visuals though.

Field Music: “A New Town”

No Comments 23 February 2012

Brothers Peter and David Brewis are the ever rotating core of Field Music, an English outfit that’s been running the album/tour laps for about 8 years now (wow 2004 was 8 years ago?). They’re well known for making understated gems that are insanely catchy, and more often than not, instrumentally so.  Take their new single “A New Town” for example.  It begins with a dreary scene, like of a parent sitting down their child to tell them about “when I was a young lad”.  Only, when these particular parents were young, they spent their pleasant nights in Spain, and their days in constant revelry with the Thunder Cats.  They. were. awesome.  The bass inlay of “A New Town” will gallop through your mind’s eye on a white steed of falsetto and luxuriate you with instrumental textures you never thought were possible.  It’s all a sign of things to come from their new album Plumb.  Which is actually amazing.

Be a dutiful child and listen to your cool-ass English parents.

(Plumb is available now from Memphis Industries)
