I suppose there are plenty of things you could refer to as “Secret Days,” as Brooklyn duo School of Seven Bells do their new single. It could be that time in your youth when you were a little chunky and maybe snuck an extra helping of macaroni and cheese at family dinners. Or the time you spent in some boring, part-time job before you found your true calling. Or maybe even that relationship where even though she was controlling, you accepted it because she was, after all, super hot. Sure, we’ve all got those days, weeks, months, or years we’d prefer to keep under wraps. However, this track from Alejandra Deheza and Benjamin Curtis is not fit for hiding, but for showing.
The chunky, mechanized beat here is a little grimy, and Deheza’s vocals give breathy life to some pretty cool, albeit straightforward lyrics about how the troubling times lead to those truly unfettered, free-as-a-bird happy days. Our best and brightest days are fashioned by our secret, perhaps darkest ones. I especially enjoy enjoy the opening lines of the song:
When I was a child, my tremor came from sadness.
My passion kept me wild, my courage came from madness.
Wanted the world to see me without the fools and chains,
wanted the world to know me without the rules and games.
All of those secret days
All of those secret days
