Matt’s Bestest Songs of the Week: 9/18/15
It’s news to none, but sleep deprivation warps your sense of self/reality. Like, make your world seem made of pot holes full of nasty tentacled grabby things, or create a belief you have latent Jedi abilities. Because I hear that babies don’t care what time of night they get their crying in, I’m a little worried “it” and I, amidst a red-eyed haze, will get into Nietzschean conversations and involuntary thumb wrestling tourneys; and only one of us will enjoy those kind of things (my baby will be the Van Damme of the Thumberdome ©). This is all to say that lack of R.E.M. might have coincidentally colored what tunes I fell into at the three and four a.m.’s this past week, so if you’re looking for something in a particular genre, odds are you’ll find it in this menagerie of tunes that, in just a few hours, i’ll probably forget putting together in the first place. All hail Nyquil and you, reader. All hail you.
Raury – “Friends”
Because: Although they went the underhanded method and appealed to our heart muscles with a children’s choir, Raury will still surprise the heck out of you, especially after a song like “Devil’s Whisper”, with this last minute summer jam.
Chvrches – “Clearest Blue”
Because: Chvrches has seemed has always managed to just barely let me down (usually after live performances), but the Scots FINALLY drop a solid beat at the 2:12 mark of “Clearest Blue”.
Vulfpeck – “Back Pocket”
Because: This song is the happiness in your life right now.
Dele Sosimi – “E Go Betta”
Windigo – “It Goes On (In My Mind)”
Because: These Canadians slay traditional song structure. Also, crazy neat vid.
Satchmode – “Never Gonna Take You Back”
Because: It’s sweet, but it’s deranged. It’s catchy, but it’s also catchy. Catchy catchy.
Deep Cotton – “Let’s Get Caught”
Because: I’D lay down in bed of roses for the guitarist, so I KNOW you would. Don’t deny it.
Hazel English – “It’s Not Real”
Because: “It’s Not Real” gets the award for the most palatial tune of the week. You can go for hikes and then further treks inside this song.

Julia Nunes – “Make Out”
Because: Is “Make Out” a euphemism here? It’s hard to decide. Maybe you can tell.
Decorations – “Girls”
Deerhunter – “Breaker”
Because: Squinty-eyed shoegaze harmonies and warbly surf guitar work. It’s a floating man with an earthquake raging around him.
Coco O. – “Hardest Thing”
Hollywood Principle – “Firework”
Because: Rocket League never gets old, and neither does it’s menu soundtrack.
Secret Someones – “Headfirst”
Because: Ready for your guilty pleasure of the week? Also bands with token men are refreshing.
Sjowgren – “Seventeen”
Because: It’s jampacked with every flavor of Indie you could want.
That’s all for now, happy Oktoberfesting!
