Matt’s Bestest Songs of the Week: 5/27/16
Instead of a brief summation of my week put into an indirect story, some brief answers to some of the MBSotW F.A.Q.’s would be for the best, since they’re asked so frequently.
Why are your articles not out every week like your title misleads me to believing they should be?
Good question that. It sometimes seems that music finds its way to me slower lately, as though life has thrown a filter made of friends and adorable cats around me. I hoard the good songs until I have enough, then let loose.
Where do these songs come from?
What do you look like? Are you single?
How dare you. Such an illicit thought. Thank you.
What’s the deal with the pictures? How do you pick them?
Reddit’s r/pics usually supplies the goods. I enjoy pictures that make me happy, like you should.
If you were an Animorph, what animal form would you chose to be stuck in if you went over the two hour time limit?
So many good questions, almost like I was asking them myself. It’s a tie between an Osprey and an Otter. I’d like to be near the ocean.
That’s enough for now. On to the music, and what could be a good bit of a dance party with your best love.
Fil Bo Riva – “Like Eye See”
Because: If you fear for the safety of Tom Waits’ smoke tank lungs, you now have a healthy alternative in the Italian/Irish Fil Bo Riva and his werewolf vocals.

Amanda Bergman – “Falcons”
Because: Leaving her Idiot Wind moniker and supergroup Amason behind for the meadow to canyon striding album, Docks; Bergman opens her debut with “Falcons”, a sultry introduction that opens seven picket fence gates at once.
BANFF and Caitlin Park – “My Love, My Lover”
Because: Australians seem to feel the wall against their back sooner than most, what with a sea of salt floating in every periphery. So it certainly makes sense that much of their tunage has a desperate air about it: the wishing, wanting kind. But valiant hearts are often made from such circumstances, “My Love, My Lover” is an example of this.

Sampha – “Timmy’s Prayer”
Because: You can practically hear the lasagna and butterscotch pudding Sampha last ate before recording the twinkling and spiraling “Timmy’s Prayer.”
Band of Horses – “Casual Party”
Because: This new tune from the Seattle club is infinite more steps towards “Weed Party” than we’ve had in ages.
Agua Roja – “Joey”
Because: It’s sensible pop from Paris, ripe for moments of liberation, self-provided or otherwise.

Dennis Kalla – “Cracked Skull” ft. The Strongest Man Who Ever Lived
Because: Manic-Depressive episodes tend to be damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don’t kind of situations, but I’ll be damned if the EP Dennis Kalla has faltered over for three years isn’t completely bangarang.

Julia Jacklin – “Pool Party”
Because: You wouldn’t/couldn’t/shouldn’t/twouldn’t be blamed for believing Angel Olsen has hired a new frontwoman for herself when you first hear Julia Jacklin. But Jacklin’s words are an inch less eeked out than Olsen’s, hopping over teeth to fan and waft out of her mouth.
SZA – “twoAM”
Because: “twoAm” is a remix and a one-step shift in perspective of PARTYNEXTDOOR and Drake’s “Come And See Me.” SZA’s vocals continue to be as alluring as a siren’s nest.
Loud Forest – “There You Are”
Because: “There You Are” must have been recorded in a hall of bearded mirrors deep within a subway tunnel.
DYAN – “St. James”
Because: Even when I should be telling you about the band and its members (Alexis Marsh, Sam Jones and Daniel Dorff Jr.), I’m already off and choosing which bespeckled egg I’d like to raise in the vintage Dinotopia montage DYAN’s debut single brings to mind.
Quiet Life – “Summer of ’16”
Because: When suddenly it’s 90 degrees before it’s actually summer, you just roll with it and wet your feet before you get into bed.
Oh Pep! – “Doctor Doctor”
Because: The verses are Willy Wonka, but the chorus is the chocolate fountain.
The Beths – “Whatever”
Because: This New Zealand group hides their mounds of campy potential underneath their older brother’s shirts and sun tousled hair styles.

The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt – Blood and Wine Soundtrack
Because: I’m human aren’t I?
Bangups – “Imposter”
Because: If you’ve got to punch a stranger based only on a song’s urging, it might as well be a good one that gets your hackles up right and good.
Have a great long weekend sir and madams.
